The Position

BASIC FUNCTION:             
Operate school bus under all types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice.  Transport students and other authorized persons safely and efficiently on regular “to and from” school routes, field trips, extra-curricular and/or special activity trips as authorized by the school district officials.  Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, students and community groups.


The Candidate

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed in this position description.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid Washington Driver's License.
  • CDL school bus endorsement.
  • Current First Aid/CPR Certificate; or successful completion of the District’s First Aid/CPR class.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must have at least four (4) years prior driving experience.
  • Must not have been convicted of any violation of law involving physical molesting, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
  • Must have a driving record relatively free of traffic violations and accidents.  Applicants whose abstracts how convictions for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, negligent driving or hit and run will not be consider for employment.
  • Must provide an abstract of their personal and commercial driving record or sign an authorized form so that the school district may send for one.
  • Passing score on the district’s basic aptitude test.
  • Pre-employment requirements include a Washington State Patrol check and FBI clearance.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of first aid.
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices.
  • Knowledge of provisions of Washington Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the school bus transportation.
 

The Details

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Indoor and outdoor environment; regular exposure to all types of weather conditions.    

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • As per WAC 180-20-101 – Minimum Qualification of School Bus Drivers… “must be able to move from a seated position in a sixty-five passenger school bus, or the largest bus the driver will be operating, to the emergency door, open the emergency door, and exit the bus through the emergency door, all within twenty-five seconds.” 

  • Must be able to re-enter through emergency exists under 45” high without assistance in 60 seconds or less.   

  • Employees must pass Commercial Driver Fitness Determination exam performed by District contracted physician.   The District will pay the basic fitness exam to the district contracted physician every 24 months.    

  • Must demonstrate to the Transportation Supervisor the ability to remove chains from bus storage and install them in thirty minutes or less on two rear tires of a 65 passenger or larger capacity bus without assistance. (required you demonstrate this to the Transportation Supervisor within ten workdays of passing the DOT Physical)  

  • Must have sufficient strength and agility to move about in an overturned bus as required to provide assistant to students evacuating the bus.  

  • Possess sufficient strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school bus through the passenger service door.  

  • Hearing capability sufficient to detect and distinguish traffic sounds occurring from any direction outside the bus, such as horns, whistles, sirens, trains, bells, etc., from a distance which will allow adequate time for defensive or evasive action to avoid a hazardous situation.

  • Vision: 20/40 in best eye, with our without correction, approximately 140 degrees peripheral vision, and depth perception adequate to reasonably determine distance and closing rate of other moving vehicles from a stationary or moving school bus.  

  • Eye coordination to avoid diplopia, color vision must be adequate to distinguish the colors of red, green and amber of traffic lights.

  • Dexterity of hands, fingers and feet to operate all hand and foot controls installed in a school bus as required by Washington State School Bus Specifications.

 

HAZARDS:

Driving on hazardous roads.

Transporting students without immediate assistance in the event of unruly students.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  •  Establish and maintain a climate of concern and respect for all students.

  • Drive a school bus on scheduled route, both within and outside the school district boundaries.

  • Inspect and clean school bus and related equipment as required by the state and school district.

  • Refuel in accordance with department procedure or as otherwise needed.

  • Maintain control of student passengers as related to safety.

  • Report unsafe acts or conditions which require the attention of any person other than the driver.

  • Complete forms, records and reports as required by the state or local school district policies accurately and legibly.

  • Operate a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies promulgated by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

  • Perform required operational and safety inspections of the school bus and all related equipment.

  • Perform basic first aid as appropriate, which may include CPR.

  • Report immediately and mechanical defects and safety hazards to the Transportation Supervisor.

  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job-related activities.     

School Employee Benefits Board (SEBB) 
School District employees benefits are managed through the School Employee Benefits Board (SEBB). Any employee anticipated to work at least 630 hours in the school year is eligible for benefits,   Dental, Vision, Basic Life/AD&D, Basic Long Term Disability are paid for by the District. Supplemental life insurance and long term disability can be purchased by the employee and also set up a Health Flexible Spending (FSA) accounts. Dependent Care Assistant Program (DCAP) account and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) if they qualify. 
 
NEW EMPLOYEES will be evaluated for eligibility at the time of hire and given written notification and instructions on how to enroll if eligible or how to appeal if not eligible.  All eligible employees must enroll in benefits using SEBB My Account within their thirty day enrollment period. The employee may waive medical coverage under certain circumstances.  If an eligible employee does not enroll in benefits during their enrollment period they will be defaulted into medical coverage.  Please read your eligibility notice carefully for instructions and deadlines and contact the Payroll Office for assistance.  
 
Employees not initially eligible for SEBB Benefits may qualify later if your hours change or you work more than 630 hours in a school year. The Payroll Office will provide you with a notice of eligibility at that time with instructions on how to enroll and deadlines.
