LPN will be working 1:1 with a medically fragile preschool aged student. Must also ride the bus too and from school to ensure students safety on the bus and in the classroom. This position is 4.5 Hours daily, M, T, Th, F. 

JOB SUMMARY:

The job of School Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is to participate as a member of the school health team to assist in addressing physical, social and emotional needs, health and safety concerns, crisis intervention and disaster planning for students.  The school LPN works with a high level of independence and professional discretion under the general supervision of a designated administrator.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Washington State License as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) (Licensed Practical Nurse RCW: 18.79.270 and WAC 246-840-705).
  • Associate degree or higher in nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License and ability to drive between school buildings when necessary.
  • Ability to ride a school bus to and from school with medically fragile students.
  • Ability to pass a Federal criminal background check.
  • Training in ventilator treatment and care.
  • Prior experience in public school nursing or pediatric nursing (preferred, not required).
  • Possession of excellent communication skills including active listening, two-way communication, and the use of the appropriate communication channels.
  • Ability to administer First Aid and CPR to students and staff.
  • Ability to maintain an upbeat, positive, and collaborative demeanor.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and tact in all aspects of employment.
  • Ability to recognize situations that exceed LPN training and expertise, thus necessitating the need to notify and consult with a district Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Ability to provide services to students who have IEP’s and/or 504 plans.
  • Ability to administer medications and treatments to students with knowledge of attendant laws and policies for dispensing and control of medications and treatments.
  • Knowledge of communicable diseases and ability to report such diseases to appropriate agencies and school personnel.
  • Skills in assessing the physical and emotional needs of students, and the ability to respond consistently and appropriately to all students in a calm, reassuring, and nurturing manner.
  • Ability to incorporate lightheartedness and humor into the workplace.
  • Ability and willingness to apply policies, procedures, statutes, and regulations accurately.
  • Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities or having otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
  • Ability and willingness to develop and maintain positive, professional, and collaborative relationships with students, families, staff and the community.
  • Ability to maintain records, answer phones, and operate office equipment and computer applications.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs, administers, and provides nursing care appropriate for an LPN but not limited to the following: Triage, assess illnesses and injuries. 
  • Administers medication and treatments according to state law which includes non-oral medications, (i.e., injections, eye/ear medications), mixing medications, blood glucose monitoring, nasogastric and J-tube feedings, suctioning, and tracheotomy care, feeding and medication by G-tube, performing clean intermittent catheterization, providing nebulizer treatments, ventilator care and other nursing care.  
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.
  • Knowledge of all health care related policies and procedures (i.e., OSHA, Blood borne Pathogen Control Plans, state mandates, district policies), and maintains compliance with current health practices.
  • May ride school bus - with student - from home to school, school to home.
  • Work as a member of a team with other health services staff to coordinate and carry out services.
  • May participate in crisis intervention.
  • Maintain communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians.
  • Follows School Board Policies and Procedures, the standards of professional school nurse practice, and state and federal statutes and regulations.
  • Assists in coordinating and delivering a school health program including the delivery of services to students and staff members to enhance health and wellness in the school community. 
  • Maintains a close liaison with assigned schools, staff, parents, community health agencies, and the private medical sector.
  • Works with frequent interruptions.
  • Supports students who have a wide range of behaviors, academic abilities, and physical and/or emotional disabilities.
  • May be required to travel in school owned or personal vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
  • Attends trainings and meetings as appropriate or directed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.                                                                                                         

REPORTS TO:  Director of Special Services or designee.

SCHEDULE: Works Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday on school days, 4.5 hours per day.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Salary and benefits according to adopted salary schedule.
