Description

Provide a service of installation, repair, and maintenance of all painting requirements throughout the district facilities for the purpose of providing a safe environment for students, staff, and patrons of Spokane Public Schools.
 

  • HOURS PER DAY: 8
  • SWING SHIFT WORK ORDER POSITION
  • START TIME:  2:45 P.M.
  • END TIME:  11:15 P.M. 
  • YEAR ROUND POSITION (260 DAYS / 12 MONTHS) 
  • ANTICIPATED START DATE: ASAP

Responsibilities

  1. Prepare various surfaces including drywall for painting by scraping, sanding, puttying, caulking, masking, taping, etc.
  2. Properly use brush, roller, and spray equipment and place drop cloths to protect adjacent surfaces.
  3. Install vinyl and paper wall coverings.
  4. Install, work from, and remove scaffolding, stages, planks and other work platforms.
  5. Mix and blend colors for all types of pigmented paints; mix latex and oil paints, enamels, varnishes, and materials to proper consistency for application.
  6. Apply primers, sealers, undercoats, and topcoats to surfaces with brush, roller, and spray gun.
  7. Paint interiors and exteriors of buildings with top quality workmanship.
  8. Estimate and order paint supplies and materials, and complete required paperwork.
  9. Prepare surfaces; apply stains and coatings to woodwork.
  10. Patch plaster and drywall. Tape and texture gypsum board and prepare other surfaces for painting.
  11. Perform paint removal using sandblasting, power washing, chemicals, and manual or mechanical techniques on various surfaces.
  12. Lay out, paint lines and graphics on various surfaces, including gym floors, pavement on playgrounds and parking lots, and on walls.
  13. Final preparation of gymnasium floors and application of gym finish on hardwood floors.
  14. Create and install signs using paint and other lettering equipment.
  15. Clean brushes, rollers, sprayer and other painting equipment.
  16. Remove graffiti using manufacturer recommended techniques. Apply anti-graffiti remover when required.
  17. Observe safety requirements for use of solvents, thinners, graffiti removers, and other materials required to perform work.
  18. Follow federal, state, and local requirements related to lead based paint and asbestos abatement and/or encapsulation regulations.
  19. Utilize computers and other communication devices.
  20. Follow district procurement card and purchasing policy.
  21. Observe safety rules and regulations.
  22. Perform related duties as required by supervisor.

Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  2. Five years recent and similar work experience preferred.
  3. Journeyman painter having completed recognized apprenticeship program preferred.
  4. Lead based paint training within six months of hire required.
  5. Ability to install vinyl and paper wall coverings.
  6. Ability to finish or refinish woodwork and cabinets.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of solvents, thinners, etc.
  8. Demonstrated competency in application and repair of graphics, signage, etc.
  9. Demonstrated competency to tape and finish gypsum wallboard surfaces.
  10. Demonstrated ability to safely operate power equipment as related to the position.
  11. Ability to work in safe manner, following all safety procedures.
  12. Demonstrated ability to use computer systems and other communications devices.
  13. Ability to review plans, specifications, shop drawings and submittals to determine applicability to existing district standards for materials and equipment. Resolve problems and provide technical expertise.
  14. Demonstrated ability to work at various heights from ladders and scaffolding. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  15. Demonstrated successful experience developing and maintaining positive professional working relationships with diverse groups of co-workers, staff, community, and others.
  16. Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication.
  17. Demonstrated ability to take and carry out directions with minimum supervision.
  18. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required.
  19. Prefer asbestos workers card or willing to obtain the card in six months.
  20. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

MENTAL DEMANDS:  Experiences multiple demands and multi-tasking. Requires concentration and attention to detail.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires prolonged standing, sitting, bending, stooping, crawling and other physical exertion; required to work on ladders and roofs; requires safety awareness on construction, repair and emergency sites; may be requested to work during off-hours for emergencies; exposed to high noise levels from machines; may be exposed to potentially dangerous conditions; required to wear protective gear; required to work outdoors in inclement weather; required to lift and carry heavy supplies, materials and equipment up to fifty (50) pounds; required to drive between sites.
