JOB SUMMARY:

The Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) serves as an instructional coach and supports the Shelton School District’s Strategic Plan and School Improvement Plans collaborated with the Teaching and Learning Department to provide personalized support for novice teachers to develop their skills as highly effective educators.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Washington State Teaching Certificate.
  • Ability to pass a Federal Criminal Background Check.
  • At least five years of successful teaching experience.
  • Ability to drive and travel between school district buildings daily.
  • Ability to provide coaching support along a continuum to teachers in their first years of service.
  • Ability to help develop and facilitate professional development for different audiences.
  • Knowledge to assist teachers in using data to inform instruction.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices for Tier 1 and Tier 2 instruction.
  • Deep knowledge of the Common Core State Standards.
  • Demonstrated teacher leadership at a school and/or as a facilitator for professional development inside or outside of a school district.
  • Demonstrated ability to use assessment data to inform instruction, understand formative and summative assessments and their uses.
  • Working knowledge of Multi-Tiered Intervention Systems.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining positive, professional relationships with staff, students, families, and community partners.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and incorporate lightheartedness, fun, and humor into the workplace.
  • Excellent, effective communication skills including the use of active listening, two-way communication, and the use of appropriate communication channels.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability and willingness to work cooperatively as an instructional team member.
  • Ability to be reflective and humble with a growth mindset.
  • Ability and willingness to support and follow the Shelton School District Strategic Plan, School Improvement Plans, School Board Policies and Procedures, all regulations pertaining to public education and special education, and District initiatives.
  • Ability and willingness to be punctual and dependable.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Implements regular coaching cycles with novice teachers, including goal setting, collaborative planning, modeling lessons, co-teaching, and providing learning-focused feedback.  
  • Works collaboratively and collegially with other TOSA's and the Teaching and Learning Department to develop, modify, and implement resources that support the District’s Strategic Plan, District initiatives, and School Improvement Plans.
  • Assists teachers in aligning their instruction with District supported standards, curriculum, and assessments. 
  • Assists building staff with the gathering, examination, and analysis of formative and summative assessment data to help staff identify areas of exceptional academic achievement as well as learning concerns for individual and groups of students in order to identify and promote the instructional practices that result in increased achievement. 
  • Models effective instructional practices. 
  • Keeps current on evidence-based practices with an emphasis on high-quality literacy instruction and providing safe and welcoming environments.
  • Shares information with the Teaching and Learning Department as needed. 
  • Provides professional development, through a variety of modalities requested by the Directors of Curriculum and Instruction. 
  • Oversees data collection in areas designated by the district. 
  • Assists teachers in analyzing and using data to plan units of instruction and lesson plans. 
  • Participates in district leadership teams that support the Strategic Plan and implementation of School Improvement Plans. 
  • Understands and promote implementation of all district curriculum in assigned areas.
  • Supports Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in implementing systems for progress monitoring. 
  • Develops and maintains a confidential, collegial relationship with teachers, colleagues, and District leadership. 
  • Attends trainings and meetings as appropriate or directed.
  • Develops and maintains positive, professional relationships with staff, students, families, and community members.
  • Utilizes effective communication strategies including active listening, two-way communication, and appropriate communication channels depending on the situation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REPORTS TO:   Director of Curriculum or designee

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

SCHEDULE: 1.0 FTE (7 hours per day, 180 school days plus professional development days per school year).

LOCATION: Office is located at the Central Office, but serves multiple buildings throughout the District. 

SALARY: $61,585 - $113,364 annually, depending on experience and education

BENEFITS: 12 sick leave days of which 6 can be used for personal leave each school year; 5 days bereavement leave per school year; health insurance benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) including medical, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance. Retirement through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS); other fringe benefits as allowed under the Shelton Education Association (SEA) Collective Bargaining Agreement.
