This is a substitute position with no guarantee of hours or days for the 2023-24 school year.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

High school graduation or equivalent (required document on application to be considered).

Completed two (2) years (72 quarter or 48 semester credits) of study at an institution of higher learning OR AA degree or higher from an approved institution, OR completion of the ETS ParaPro Assessment with a passing score (required document on application to be considered).

JOB SUMMARY:

The job of Para Educator is done for the purpose/s of supporting and assisting in the supervision and instruction of students; performing classroom clerical tasks; providing general classroom assistance.

 (e.g.: prepare and organize classroom materials, clean, and disinfect toys and mats); providing one-on-one tutoring; assisting with classroom management; providing instructional assistance; conducting parental involvement activities; providing support in learning centers; assisting with the implementation of student educational plans; and providing instructional support services under the direct supervision of a teacher.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Depending upon the individual assignment, the Para Educator performs all or a combination of several of the following duties.  This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.

  1. Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of assisting teachers and students.
  2. Assists and supports the teacher with instructional activities which may include reading, writing, math, study skills, social skills, behavior and/or personal living skills.
  3. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  4. Assists staff with discipline for the purpose of supporting a safe learning and working environment and building policies.
  5. Guides independent study (e.g.: enrichment work, remedial work, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student success.
  6. Implements, under the supervision of the teacher, instructional programs, and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students' academic success through a defined course of study.
  7. Monitors individual students, classroom, lab, library, playground activities, etc. (e.g.: workstations, breakfast duty, lunch duty, bus duty, field trips and other campus activities) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  8. Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g.: scheduling, copying, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or administrator in providing necessary records/materials.
  9. Depending on assignment, assists with development and implementation of students’ Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and developing students’ skills in daily living, physical, social, communication and behavior.
  10. Participates in meetings and training.
  11. Depending on the assignment administers first aid, medical assistance, physical support and personal care for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or disabled children.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Skills are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include basic word processing and keying preferred.

Knowledge is required to minimally perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes age-appropriate activities.

Ability is required to schedule activities, collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include maintaining regular attendance and punctuality, working as part of a team, adapting to changing work priorities, communicating with diverse groups, establishing, and maintaining effective working relationships, and working with constant interruptions.  Depending on assignment, fluency in Spanish and English may be required.                                                                                                             

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 20% walking, and 50% standing. Depending on the specific assignment, the job is performed under minimal temperature variations.

REPORTS TO: Principal, Program Administrator, or designee, depending on assignment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and benefits according to adopted salary schedule and negotiated agreement.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of Washington State Law and the bargained agreement.
