JOB SUMMARY: 

The job of Para Educator is done for the purposes of supporting and assisting in the supervision and instruction of students during the summer school program days and times. This may include performing classroom clerical tasks as well as providing general classroom assistance such as preparing and organizing classroom materials; cleaning and disinfecting toys and mats; providing one-on-one tutoring; assisting with classroom management; assisting with student behavior; providing instructional assistance; conducting parental involvement activities; providing support in learning centers; assisting with the implementation of student educational plans; and providing instructional support services under the direct supervision of a teacher.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current Para Educator with Shelton School District
  • Ability and willingness to maintain regular attendance over the entire course of the summer program
  • Ability and willingness to develop and maintain positive, professional relationships with staff, students, and families
  • Ability and willingness to work with a diverse student population including student with Individual Educational Plans (IEP's)
  • Ability and willingness to maintain a positive attitude at work
  • Ability and willingness to assist with student behavior
  • Ability and willingness to perform the essential functions of of the job with or without reasonable accommodations

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of assisting teachers and students.
  • Assists and supports teachers with instructional activities which may include reading, writing, math, study skills, social skills, behavior and/or personal living skills.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Assists staff with student behavior for the purpose of supporting a safe learning and working environment and building policies.
  • Guides independent study (e.g.: enrichment work, remedial work, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student success.
  • Implements, under the supervision of the teacher, instructional programs, and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students' academic success through a defined course of study.
  • Monitors individual students, classroom, lab, library, playground activities, etc. (e.g. workstations, breakfast duty, lunch duty, bus duty, field trips and other campus activities) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g.: scheduling, copying, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or administrator in providing necessary records/materials.
  • Depending on assignment, assists with development and implementation of students’ Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and developing students’ skills in daily living, physical, social, communication and behavior.
  • Participates in meetings and trainings.
  • Depending on the assignment administers first aid, medical assistance, physical support and personal care for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or children with disabilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REPORTS TO: Principal, Program Administrator, or designee, depending on assignment.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

DURATION: Temporary, June 24, 2024-July 25, 2024

SCHEDULE: Monday-Thursday (excluding July 4, 2024); 8:00PM - 12:30 PM

SALARY: Individual's will be paid at their current step as a Para Educator on the 2023-2024 salary schedule ($22.51-$25.59). Any Para Educator working with students in the EBD or DD program shall also receive an additional $2.00 per hour. Time worked will be documented and paid via time sheets.
