Job Title: Substitute Instructional Paraeducator 

Work Location: Nine Mile Falls School District 

Nature and Scope of Job

Paraeducators are an integral part of the learning and teaching team. Under the direction of the principal or designee, paraeducators assist with multiple levels of support in schools. The instructional paraeducator assists in providing instruction to and supervision of students in a variety of settings. 

These settings include, but are not limited to: cafeterias/eating areas, classrooms, playground/recess, crosswalks, hallways, and bus/loading areas. ALE are non-traditional learning environments that provide expanded learning opportunities for students. 

LAP/Title provides targeted assistance to students with specific academic needs. Preschool paraeducators foster learning through intentional play, exploration, and language-rich environments. Resource Room supports and delivers systematic instruction designed by special education teachers. 

The instructional paraeducator may also perform clerical and office tasks in support of teachers and other district staff.

Classification: Substitute Instructional Paraprofessional 

Work Day:  Monday – Friday; Hours Vary

Begin: 2023/24 School Year

Salary:  Current Washington State Minimum Wage     

Benefits: Substitutes will accrue 1 hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked.  Substitutes who work 630 hours will become benefit-eligible for the remainder of the school year.  Standard benefits include, Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance and Long-Term Disability. Primary Job Functions

  1. Assignments may include: Alternative Learning Experience (ALE), Categorical Programs (LAP/Title), General Classroom, Kindergarten, Library, Locker Room Supervision, Lunch/Recess Supervision, Office Support, PE, Resource Room, Self-Contained.
  2. Under the direction of the principal or designee, paraeducators assist with multiple levels of support in schools.
  3. The instructional paraeducator assists in providing instruction to and supervision of students in a variety of settings.
  4. LAP/Title provides targeted assistance to students with specific academic needs.
  5. Preschool paraeducators foster learning through intentional play, exploration, and language-rich environments.
  6. Resource Room supports and delivers systematic instruction designed by special education teachers.
  7. The instructional paraeducator may also perform clerical and office tasks in support of teachers and other district staff.
  8. Support the implementation of teacher-designed instructional activities and classroom routines.
  9. Conduct teacher/therapist-designed instructional experiences.
  10. Work with individual and small groups of students.
  11. Supervise, model, and teach expected behaviors across educational settings, including classrooms, lunchroom, playground, hallways, etc.
  12. Foster social and language development through play activities and active engagement with children.
  13. Promote students’ best interests through positive role modeling and student advocacy.
  14. Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and perform clerical duties associated with the general instruction program.
  15. Consistently and respectfully respond to student needs while maintaining confidentiality
  16. Monitor highly structured environments.
  17. Implement teacher-directed programs with students on a one-to-one and/or small group basis in special education classrooms as well as during general education inclusion time.
  18. Assist student(s) with diet, feeding, personal care, hygiene, movement, and mobility needs.
  19. Assist with learning tasks/activities appropriate to students with moderate to significant disabilities and aligned to IEP goals, under the direction of a special education teacher.
  20. Assist with the implementation of positive support interventions and academic support for identified students.
  21. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Required Qualifications (Traits, Education, Experience, Training, physical requirements, etc.):

  1. High school diploma or equivalent. Para Educator/Instructional Assistant/Secretarial applicants must. 
  2. ETS Parapro Assessment (455) or 
    1. Pearson Paraprofessional Assessment (220) Available in December 2023); or
    2. The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program; (65%) or
    3. Unofficial Transcript of an Associate of Arts degree; or
    4. Have earned seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight-semester credits at an institution of higher education (provide unofficial transcript); or
    5. Completed a registered apprenticeship program
  3. Ability to work and communicate successfully with students, teachers, parents and administrators.
  4. Physically capable of lifting students (50 pounds), kneeling, and bending.
  5. Ability to respond appropriately to active and disruptive behaviors.
  6. Competent in basic math, reading, and communication skills.
  7. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  8. Ability to meet highly qualified paraprofessional standards. 

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Experience and training in working with students who receive special education/remedial services.
  2. The employee is occasionally required to sit, bend at neck and back, use hands to push/pull and lift/carry; squat, kneel, climb stairs or ladders, reach overhead, lift overhead, and knee stand.

Environmental Demands:

  1. Air-conditioned building.
  2. Occasional exposure to weather extremes.
  3. Fluorescent/LED lighting.

Upon Hire:

If an offer of employment is made, new employees must complete a background check for criminal history, including a fingerprint check by the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any offer of employment is contingent upon the successful outcome of the criminal history background check and approval by the Nine Mile Falls School District Board of Directors.
