Job Description
General Responsibilities: Under general supervision, the Special Education Teacher will provide special education services to assigned students per state and federal regulations. They will assist in evaluating, developing, and implementing Individual Education Programs (IEP) in the setting determined appropriate by the IEP team. They are responsible for preparing and providing specialized instruction to include (but not limited to): lesson plans, preparing materials, and designing activities that ensure FAPE for students with disabilities. The Special Education Teacher will progress monitor student goals in compliance with state and federal guidelines in a confidential manner.
 
Qualifications:
  • BA degree in subject area in elementary or secondary education with appropriate major and minor 
  • Appropriate State of Alaska Teacher Certification 
Duties:
  • Develops Individualized Education Programs with criterion-referenced present levels of performance levels, measurable short-term objectives, and annual goals related to assessment results. 
  • Utilizes research-based strategies for teaching and interventions along with diagnostic information (standardized testing/quantitative and qualitative data) obtained from additional assessment procedures to develop, implement, and update the IEP with goals/objectives that are aligned with system-wide/school curricular goals. 
  • Provide specialized instruction according to the IEP and determine any adjustments that need to be made to assist the student in meeting their goals/objectives. 
  • Determine appropriate modifications and accommodations for students identified as having a disability in at least 1 of the 13 disability categories to ensure their access to curricular and extracurricular activities. 
  • Communicates frequently with parents regarding their children’s educational progress and provides regular student progress reports to both parents and classroom teachers. 
  • Collaborate frequently with all members of the IEP team (district representatives, administration, general education teachers, students, parents, other agencies) to ensure updated knowledge of student present levels, progress, and educational needs. 
  • Monitors student behavior; maintains order and discipline in the classroom; deescalates inappropriate behaviors; teaches students appropriate behavioral strategies; restrains students when necessary; records and reports restrains.  Supervises classroom instructional aide(s) and serves as a resource for working with students with disabilities. 
  • Supervises IEP goal-based activities of students, providing appropriate feedback. 
  • Assists disabled students with their personal and self-help needs, including eating, toileting, and other essential tasks that the students are not able to perform independently. 
  • Acts as a case manager for assigned students, consulting with community caregivers, school support professionals, students, and parents to identify and meet student needs.   
  • Treats all students fairly and equitably; interacts effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community. 
  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical, legal, and counseling terminology.
